Not Just a One Stop Red Light!


Downtown Banner Elk is not just a one stop red light in a small little mountain town of North Carolina. For being such a small town it has a unqiue location within the mountains; between two major ski resorts in the Southeast and has become a mecca for outdoor enthusiats that come from all over. Banner Elk North Carolina sometimes has no traffic at all, then all of a sudden the town is thriving with people walking about downtown, traffic is backed up to the Best Western Mountain Lodge, and you cannot get any where. The town starts to come alive as the snow lifts and the weather gets more sunny. You will see locals running, walking, and excercising thoughout town and mountain biking on the greenway trails, or cyclist groups riding at all hours. May kids and families will feed the ducks at the Lees McCrae Pond. In early May when all the second homeowners and Florida folks arrive the town kicks into gear one. Then when school lets out and after Memorial Day Banner Elk becomes a town of many faces. Almost every weekend you will see a festival of arts and crafts at the old Banner Elk Elementary right next to downtown.
